“For twenty years neither on land nor in heaven”
Halil, Sadri and Zyle Ujkani, Mitrovica
Halil and Zyle Ujkani lost their two sons, Mahit and Shaip, in April 1999. Halil’s brother, Sadri, also lost two sons, Faton and Shkëlzen. The third brother, Zahit, who died two years ago, also lost his son, Nazim.
The five boys, after seeing that the Serb forces are burning the surrounding villages, leave the house together the same day, knowing that their chances of survival are small, if they stay in the village when the Serb forces arrive. They leave with some LDK political officials from Mitrovica whom Halil kept in his house.
Halili, Sadriu and Zyla, who are forced to leave the village a few days later, recount their wartime experiences and the odyssey of post-war efforts to follow in the footsteps of sons they never saw again.
