“Something happened, don’t cry!”

Story #4

“Something happened, don’t cry!”

Nezir and Hamide Avdyli, Mitrovica

The parents of eight children, Nezir and Hamide Avdyli, remember the time when the war separated them from two sons they never saw again. Their three sons, Fadil (24 years old), Fatmir (18 years old) and Kujtim (16 years old), were separated from the family to join the exodus of people who were being deported. Kujtim managed to hide with some cousins in a hut. The other two were in the group that had been pulled from the exodus to a backyard. Fatmir was killed there, while Fadil managed to escape, being wounded in the arm. A neighbor he met on the street bandaged his wound. He is the last to report seeing Fadil alive.

Today, after twenty years, the family still knows nothing about his fate, despite the efforts made by father Nezir and brother Kujtim to find him. Hamidja says that in dreams Fadil often repeats: “Come on oh mother, come with me, because I do not have time! Come with me too! ” The parents live in the hope that they will at least find the bones while they are still alive.
